The official census of the United States in 1880 recorded only 248 Ords resident in the USA. The most prominent was probably Edward Otho Cresap Ord (1818-1883) the noted Civil War General, who was reputed to be descendes fronm an illegitimate son of George IV of England.

 

Ord of Utah, USA

 

Thomas Ord (1826-1907) was the youngest son of George Ord (b1780) a grocer in South Shields, Co Durham. ( See Ord of Fisburn and Gt Stainton).

He was born in South Shields ad baptised at St Hilda's Church on 28 May 1826. In 1843 at the age of 17 he was rebaptised and admitted as a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints at Cockenzie, Haddington, Scotland. The Church had been esablished in Utah, USA in 1838 and he was one of the first British converts.

He married Eleanor Grant of Leicester in 1856 and in that year they emigrated to the USA. He settled as a farmer at Nephi, Utah and is recorded there in the USA census of 1880 with his wife, four sons and a daughter.

His third greatgrandson Allyn Ord has carried out extensive research into numerous branches of the Ord family.

Thomas had two elder brothers. William Watson Ord (b1809) was a Trinity House pilot and brought up his family at Stepney, London. George (b1824) was a butcher at Westoe, South Shields. His three sons became glassmakers and each had families in South Shields
